Finding Hope and Independence: Our Journey with the Adult Day Program at Garden Spot Village

Testimonial for DayBreak, Garden Spot Village’s Adult Day Program, as shared by Diane Hivner

When I first started considering an adult day program for my father, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Dad had always been someone who went out every day, and I could see him becoming more isolated at home. I was concerned about his socialization and felt he needed a different environment beyond our four walls – somewhere he could thrive and stay engaged.

Because we were not sure how it would go, Dad started with just two half days at DayBreak, Garden Spot Village’s Adult Day Program. He liked it so much that we quickly added a third day. He genuinely looks forward to going to DayBreak and is disappointed on the days he doesn’t attend. It’s incredible to see how much this program has become a highlight of his week.

The changes I’ve noticed in Dad since he started attending DayBreak have been remarkable. While he’s always been a happy person, I can see he’s gained more confidence in himself. He’s always willing to help others and has developed this wonderful sense of pride in what he accomplishes. Before DayBreak, he would often say things like “I’m not very good at it,” but now he comes home saying “I did pretty good!” That shift in his self-perception has been truly heartwarming.

Dad has become DayBreak’s biggest advocate. He tells everyone about the program—the wonderful staff, activities like playing volleyball, and especially the girls with guitars. He absolutely loves volleyball and drumming, though he enjoys all the activities they offer. The interactive nature of the program has been perfect for him.

I cannot speak highly enough about the quality of the care Dad receives from the staff. I give them 1000%. Dad loves all the girls at DayBreak, and they keep me updated on any concerns they might have. Knowing he’s in such caring hands gives me incredible peace of mind.

Perhaps most importantly, this program has transformed my life as a caregiver. Before DayBreak, I felt constantly anxious and stressed, always worrying about where Dad was and how he was doing. Now, I can focus on myself – get my hair cut, have my nails done, and take care of my own needs without that constant worry. I don’t feel nearly as anxious or stressed as I did before he started attending.

The program has given our entire family a better quality of life. Dad maintains his independence and dignity through all the engaging activities, and our relationships have improved because I’m no longer stretched so thin. The regular respite has been a game-changer.

To any family who’s hesitant about enrolling their loved one in an adult day program, I say this: Do it! Not only does it help your loved one, but you’ll have such a good feeling knowing they’re at Garden Spot Village. It has been a great experience, and I would recommend it to all caregivers. DayBreak didn’t just give my father a place to spend his days. DayBreak gave him a community where he feels valued, engaged, and happy. And they gave me the gift of knowing he’s thriving while I take care of myself too.
